Basic instructions and tips for finding music materials in the online catalog

When to Use the Summon (Red Box) Search

To find materials in the CCM Library and to find materials with strictly musical content or subject matter, the Advanced Keyword Search screen (accessed through the CCM Catalog Search link) is the best-suited search tool. 

But any time you are interested in a topic that is not strictly musical, a topic where music intersects with another discipline, or want to be sure to access materials that cover more than music, such as newspapers, you might also use the other major search method called SUMMON, entering search terms in the  Red Box. Even searching a strictly musical topic like "Beethoven and the Metronome" can have interesting results in Summon

 

A Summon search generally returns many results that you then refine using the categories or "facets" on the left. Note that even without using the facets, an interesting non-musical source is the first result:
