Arbitration Rules

Arbitral tribunals are created by agreements called compromis that clarify the identity of the parties, the jurisdiction of the tribunal over both persons and subject matter, the method of selecting the tribunal, the parties’ commitment to carry out in good faith the decision of the arbitrator. This section contains the sources of the major codes of the rules of arbitration.

Hague Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes 1899 (PDF)
The Hague Peace Conference of 1899 culminated in the adoption of a Convention on the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes, which dealt with arbitration and other peaceful methods of settlement. The 1899 Convention provided for the creation of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and a set of rules of procedure to govern the conduct of arbitrations.

In 1907, a second Hague Peace Conference, to which the States of Central and South America were also invited, revised the Convention and improved the rules governing arbitral proceedings.

United Nations Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards
The Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, also known as the "New York Arbitration Convention" or the "New York Convention", is one of the key instruments in international arbitration. The New York Convention applies to the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards and the referral by a court to arbitration.
UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules
The UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules provide a comprehensive set of procedural rules upon which parties may agree for the conduct of arbitral proceedings arising out of their commercial relationship and are widely used in ad hoc arbitrations as well as administered arbitrations. The Rules cover all aspects of the arbitral process, providing a model arbitration clause, setting out procedural rules regarding the appointment of arbitrators and the conduct of arbitral proceedings, and establishing rules in relation to the form, effect and interpretation of the award. At present, there exist three different versions of the Arbitration Rules: (i) the 1976 version; (ii) the 2010 revised version; and (iii) the 2013 version.
