Downloading ProQuest Ebook Central e-books

In Ebook Central, you can download just what you need - typically, you're enabled to download individual pages and chapters as well as the entire book. If UC has access to only 1 copy of the book, full book download may not be permitted.

Download a chapter

When you copy pages or download chapters, you get a PDF file that does not expire. You can search the text and copy passages you need for your research and copy and export citations in the format of your choice. The amount of pages you are allowed to copy is clearly stated. It varies from book to book.

To download a chapter of a book, click on Chapter Download. In the pop-up window, select a citation style and the required chapter name. Click Continue and then Open PDF.

Download chapter

Download an entire book

If full book download is permitted, in order to download a book to read offline on your own computer or mobile device, you will be required to install free e-book viewing software.

If you are using a PC or Mac, you will need to:

  • Download Adobe Digital Editions. This is available free from the ADE website.
  • You will also need to create a free account with Adobe. Instructions on how to use ADE are available from their website.

For mobile devices such as iPads, iPhones and Android devices:

  • The software you will need to read a ProQuest e-book is the free Bluefire Reader app.
  • You will also be prompted to set up a free account with Adobe.

Downloaded e-books can also be transferred to any portable e-book reader that supports Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). There is a list of compatible devices on the ADE website.

Please note that the  download periods available to you may vary depending on the number of copies held by the library.

For many books in Ebook Central, you can choose your download format - PDF or EPUB. Books in PDF retain the look and feel of the print book. EPUB allows you to resize the text of the book, which may be helpful on a tablet, phone, or other smaller device.

Printing and copying

Printing and copying allowances for each book are displayed on both the Book Details page.  This is the first page that will display once you have selected a title you wish to look at:
