What's in this guide

This research guide provides information about primary, secondary, and tertiary sources on popular music, including Rock-n-Roll, Hip Hop, etc., which can assist you in finding and analyzing discourse on popular music.

While this guide is primarily intended for English 2089 courses, it can be used by anyone doing research in popular music and analyzing critical sources on the subject.

Research tips

While you are deciding on the topics and musicians, consider the following:

  • Musicians and bands with common or single word names will be hard to find unless you add more specific information like a song or album title.
  • Songs with common titles like I love you, Go Away, or Summertime can be hard to find. When you search, add the name of the performer or song writer and put the title in quotes, for example: "I Love You" Anita O'Day
  • Some musicians and bands may be too recent or too local and there may not be easily available or trustworthy information about them.
