Research Process at UCBA

Starting point and step-by-step guide to the research process.

Scholarly Articles

Scholarly journal articles are very different from other types of articles and can be challenging to read.  Before starting, be sure to have a good understanding of your research focus.  Although your topic may change as you work through the research process, having a solid idea of what you want to focus on will help you make sure the article you have chosen is relevant to your research.

Strategies for Reading Scholarly Articles

You do not have to read the article in order from the beginning.  Try reading these sections first to help you decide if the article is relevant to your research topic.  If yes, then read the remaining sections of the article.  Remember to take notes (whatever method works best for you) while reading the article.

  1. Abstract: summarizes the article
  2. Discussion & Conclusion: sums up the article so you can decide if you want to read the rest of it or move on to one that is more relevant
  3. Introduction: reveals the author's purpose for the study
