Visiting Scholars' Guide

Locating Material

In most UC Libraries you are expected to locate the books yourself. See tips on locating and library materials. A librarian or student at the service desk will be happy to assist you.

Checking Out Material

What can be checked out

Visiting scholars who are granted library access by the University may borrow most materials that have a status of Available in the catalog (some items such as reference books, newspapers and magazines are not available for loan). You must check out the material you wish to borrow at the service desk. You can find the faculty borrowing privileges here

UC Libraries (Uptown Campus) does NOT loan equipment such as laptops or cameras. Please refer to your hosting department for your technology needs.

How to check out

For checking out library material you need your University of Cincinnati I.D. card. If you forgot your library I.D., you may use any valid picture I.D., such as a driver's license.

When you check out a book, the library staff member will put a stamp in your book to remind you when it needs to be returned. You can also manage your account online.  Tips on managing your library record.

Please note that all materials can be recalled if they are wanted by other patrons. If you get a recall notice (a request to return the book wanted by another patron), please note that fines will be applied from the day it needs to be returned.

Printing and copying

Printing cost is $.09 per black and white print. $0.37 per color print, and is paid for by the user through a Bearcat Campus Card.

You can deposit money to your card at any time during the year at convenient locations around campus, our Web site blackboard.uc.edu 24/7, at the MainStreet Connection Center desk on level 3 of Tangeman University Center (TUC), at Langsam Library on the 4th floor, Medical Science Building 1st Floor, or level 2 of TUC using the VTS (Value Transfer Station) where you add money on the spot, or call the Bearcat Card office at 513-556-2000.

Most library have photocopiers that accept change, $1 and $5 bills, and Bearcat Canpus Cards.  The charge is 10¢ per page.  If you use your Bearcat Campus Card (your UC  ID), the cost is 8¢ per page. Langsam Library does not have a copier.

Security

The security gates are installed to make sure that all materials taken out of the library have been checked out. Sometimes the alarm may ring accidentally. If this happens to you, please let the librarian on duty talk to you to find out what may have caused the alarm to go out.

Please do not leave your personal belongings unattended at any time.

Protect the security of your personal information by logging out of computers.
