Why Appalachian and Rural Studies?

The Appalachian and Rural Studies (ARS) certificate at UC offers students with interest in rural life a pathway of study in multi-disciplinary areas. Through course work, collaborative research, and experiential learning, students will explore diverse aspects of rural life and culture including education, art, health, and sustainability through a strong interdisciplinary theme. By emphasizing the importance of integrating knowledge from multiple perspectives, these courses equip students with skills that translate academic learning into vocations and regional service through careers in Education, Government, Social Work, Health Care, and Public Safety. Certificates at UC allow students to get a jump start on their careers. These programs are short, typically one year, and offer career-ready skills or focused academic content for transfer. Certificates are ideal for those who may be already working in their chosen careers and would like additional credentials. They also offer some students a quick path into the workforce.
