Legal Technology Competency

Legal Technology Competency Checklist


  • Complete Technology in Law Practice (Fall, 2 credits)


  • Complete all of the following Procertas Legal Technology Assessment (LTA) modules:
    • LTA Tutorial to the Level of Finished.
    • LTA Word Trainer to the Level of Finished.
    • LTA Excel Trainer to the Level of Finished.
    • LTA PDF Trainer to the Level of Finished.
    • LTA Word Assessment to the Level of Qualified or above.
    • LTA Excel Assessment to the Level of Qualified or above.
    • LTA PDF Assessment to the Level of Qualified or above.
Note: Adobe Acrobat Pro is needed to complete the LTA PDF Trainer and LTA PDF Assessment.  Adobe Acrobat Pro is available on the computers in the Library Computer Lab.



  • Complete at least 2 technology related courses to achieve a minimum of 6 credits.
Please note that a number of different courses could satisfy this requirement. An example of some of the classes that can count include, but are not limited to:
  • Computer and Internet Law
  • Copyright Law 
  • Electronic Discovery: Procedural and Evidentiary Issues
  • Introduction to Intellectual Property Law 
  • Introduction to Financial Technology

As new courses are added to the curriculum that count as a “technology related” course, they will be added to this list. Additionally, if you believe a class you are taking should count as a “technology related” class, you may ask the Associate Dean of Library Services for permission to have the course count as part of the 6 credits needed to complete this section of the legal technology competency.


  • Subscribe to at least 2 of the following Blawgs or Newsletters

  • Cybersecurity & Privacy
  • Intellectual Property
Bloomberg Law – Sign up for Newsletters
  • Privacy & Data Security Law News


  • Write a 250 – 500 word blog post describing a recent technology trend, legal case or other technology development as it pertains to the legal profession.  All sources must be properly cited and attributed using the Bluebook.  All blog posts are subject to approval before posting and must adhere to the Best Practices for Blog Posts criteria.



  • You must submit at least 2 blog posts.  Note: Due to space restrictions, it may not be possible for all blog posts to be posted to the Marx Markings page.
