This page provides the analysis worksheet for the COMM 1010 course, an overview on reading scholarly articles, and strategies for taking notes while reading them. 

The Anatomy of a Scholarly Article video (3:12 minutes) provides strategies for reading scholary articles. The Reading Scholarly Articles handout (Word file link) illustrates the structure of a scholarly article. If you decide the article you've found is relevant to your research question then carefully read each section of the article and take notes.

There are several different note-taking methods. Some strategies while reading a potential scholarly article include:

• Print the article and highlight or circle while reading
• Add notes in the margins of each section of the article
• Summarize the key/main points of the article

Note: Adobe Reader has helpful features such as highlight text and sticky notes.
