What is EBM?

Evidence-based medicine is a process that begins and ends with the patient; it is "the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research."

Sackett DL, Rosenberg WM, Gray JA, Haynes RB, Richardson WS. Evidence based medicine: what it is and what it isn't. BMJ. 1996;312(7023):71-72.

The EBM Process

5 As of EBM: assess, ask, acquire, appraise, and apply. All of which are centered on the patient.

The EBM process can be described as the 5 As.

  1. Assess - determine what the patient, problem or issue is.
  2. Ask - create an answerable clinical question with PICO.
  3. Acquire - use the PICO elements to search the databases and find the evidence.
  4. Appraise - determine the quality and the applicability of the evidence.
  5. Apply - use the evidence to solve the problem, treat your patient.
