Finding translated works

While there isn't a straightforward search for finding translated books in library online catalogs, there are several strategies that can help.

  • If you're looking for the translation of a specific book, searching the UC library catalog by AUTHOR will retrieve all copies of the author's work, regardless of language. See, for example, catalog search results for Wolf, Christa
  • To find translations into a language, in the Advanced Keyword search box using subject words "translations into English".

Please note that is is NOT a comprehensive search.

  • In Worldcat, searching for the original title and limiting the search to a specific language will retrieve translated versions. For example, searching "Der Geteilte Himmel" as a title with a limit to the English language will return "They divided the sky" and "Divided heaven", two translations of Christa Wolf's novel.
  • Index Translationum - World Bibliography of Translation  is a searchable list of books translated in the world, i.e. an international bibliography of translations. The Index Translationum was created in 1932. Search the Index. You will then need to locate the desired title in the library catalog.
