What are Lexis, Westlaw & B-Law?

Lexis, Westlaw, and B-Law (Bloomberg Law) are subscription-based online legal research services. Students affiliated with the College of Law will be given registration codes for these services.

Lexis Registration Instructions

• Start at the Lexis Registration page
• Type in your registration code (in your Intro to Law packet).
• Complete your Sign-in Profile & Remember Your Info!

Westlaw Registration Instructions

• Go to the Westlaw Registration page
• Use your registration key (in your Intro to Law packet)
• Create your OnePass credentials and complete a law school profile.
• The custom username and password is used for accessing Westlaw via the law school portal. If you access Westlaw via the Westlaw.com page, use your custom ID and password and type something (it can be anything, such as your initials) in the client ID box.
• If you need to edit or update your registration information, click the Register Password link inside the login box and then select Updating Your  Account Information.

Bloomberg Law

Bloomberg Law is a relatively new entry into the market for electronic legal research. 

• Go to the Bloomberg Law Activation page.
• Use your activation code (in your Intro to Law packet)
• Follow the directions and prompts to create your username and password.
• You will receive an email with a verification link. Once you have clicked that link, you will receive a second email with your access information.

Summer 2023 Access

Lexis

If you’re already registered for Lexis, you don’t need to do anything else to get Summer Access.  Access is unlimited for any purpose.

Westlaw

You can use Westlaw over the summer for non-commercial research. You can turn to these resources to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills, but you cannot use them in situations where you are billing a client. Examples of permissible uses for your academic password include the following:

• Summer coursework
• Research assistant assignments
• Law Review or Journal research
• Moot Court research
• Non-Profit work
• Clinical work
• Externship sponsored by the school

B-Law

If your workplace has a Bloomberg Law account, you are expected to use that, but there are no restrictions on your student Bloomberg accounts over the summer.
