Hoover's, in their "company profile", lists company competitors with links to these companies. It also allows for a financial comparison among the top three competitors.

Standard & Poor's Net Advantage

Major competitors can be identified by searching for a market research report on the industry. Most MRRs would include major competitors. To do that go to : Industry/Product Data and search for the industry by NAICS or textual description. If you are not sure, there are instruction at the top of the page on how to identify the report.
