Tables, Carrels, Study Rooms & Other Study Spaces

Reserving a Library Seat

Image of a student studying in carrelStudents are able to reserve specific seats in the study rooms, carrels, the computer lab, or at a table, for a limited time period in the Library as long as it is not already reserved and not blocked off for social distancing.

  • Sign up for a seat at the circulation desk. You can sign in when you arrive and stay as long as you like until closing.
  • We ask that you sign in for a particular seat and sign out when you leave.
  • Reservations are on a first come first serve basis and will be available for day of seating. We will not be reserving seats in advance.
  • You are required to disinfect your seating area before you use it and after you use it. Disinfecting stations are located throughout the law library;
  • Please do not move furniture. Chairs and furniture have been arranged to meet social distancing requirements.

Security

Safety & Security

Although the Library tries to provide a safe and secure environment for research and study, thefts can occur. Do not leave belongings unattended. The Library is not responsible for any books and personal belongings left unattended.  Materials left unattended for any length of time without special arrangements may be reshelved or placed in lost & found at the Library staff's discretion. Unclaimed items of value are turned over to the UC Department of Public Safety.

Reporting Incidents

Should a theft or other incident occur:

  • call 556-1111
  • state that you are calling from the University of Cincinnati, the building name (the College of Law is the Taft Building), room number and reason for the call, and description of act and any suspect involved (if possible)
  • remain until UC Public Safety Officer arrives

Food & Beverages in the Law Library

Image of Water BottleBeverages

Beverages in containers with lids are permitted in the Library.

Food

No food is permitted in the Computer Labs or the Rare Book Room. Packaged snack foods such as candy, chips, pretzels, crackers, and cookies; as well as other non-odiferous, non-messy foods are allowed in the Library’s open areas.  Please dispose of wrappers and containers promptly. Please do not keep food in your carrel. This food policy aims to strike a reasonable balance in providing an inviting and flexible study environment but also in allowing for your classmates’ enjoyment of a clean, well-kept facility without strong or lingering food smells.  It also prevents damage to library resources. All unattended food items in the law library are subject to removal and disposal by the staff.  Failure of students to handle or dispose of beverage or food properly may cause the policy to be revised.

Restrooms

The only public restrooms within the Library are located at the far end of the first floor. The nearest restrooms outside of the Library are on the third floor of the building, across from the Moot Court office (Room 304).

Noise

Unfortunately, sound carries in the Law Library.  Please avoid loud or lengthy conversations in open areas of the Law Library, and any other conduct that disturbs others or disrupts their work.  Please step outside of the Library for cell phone conversations and turn off the ring feature on your cell phone or pager.

Lost & Found

The Law Library maintains a lost and found area at the Circulation Desk. After a reasonable period of time, unclaimed items are disposed of or turned over to the UC Department of Public Safety.
