Searching for Performance Arts Materials using OneSearch

Basic instructions and tips for finding music and other performance arts materials using OneSearch advanced search

Availability and requesting materials

You will see different availability statuses and different options to access resources in your OneSearch searching.

When you conduct a search in "UC Libraries Catalog," you are only searching physical materials held in the UC libraries, so items will be either available to access/check out or unavailable.

  • A search result might show that an item is available. The record will display the call number, so you will be able to find the item on the shelf or request help finding it. Clicking into the catalog record will allow you to learn more about the available item. Many items are available to check out for a normal loan period, but some items are on reserve and can only be checked out for a limited loan period, and some items do not circulate at all and must be used only in the library.
  • A search result might show that an item is unavailable, meaning the library does have a copy but another patron is borrowing it or it is in repair. In this case, several options are available to gain access to the item. First, make sure you are logged in.
    • You may click into the catalog record to request the item. Click on "Request" under the "Get It" section of the record. Complete the short form and hit "Send Request." However, be aware that it may take some time before the requested item will be available for you.
      • In the past, it was more than 4 weeks, because the recall gave the patron with the item 3 weeks to return it and then there was time for the item to be processed and the person to be notified.
    • You also have the option of requesting the item from a library beyond UC. Learn more in the OhioLINK and Interlibrary Loan/ ILLiad box below.

OhioLINK and Interlibrary Loan/ ILLiad

When you conduct a search in "Articles, Books and More," you are searching for physical and digital materials available through the UC libraries as well as OhioLINK institutions. OhioLINK is a consortium of college and university libraries throughout Ohio to enable circulation of materials across institutions.

  • An item record will display OhioLINK availability if applicable. If an item is not available in the UC libraries, you may request it from OhioLINK. Make sure that you are logged in, then click the "Get It" button under the "Get it from OhioLINK" button. Complete the form and submit.

  • If an item is not available through the UC libraries or OhioLINK, you may request it through Interlibrary Loan, or ILLiad. Click on "Interlibrary Loan/ILLiad" under the "Get It" section of the item record. The link will take you to the ILLiad login, and then you can request the item.

Electronic and digital materials

When you conduct a search in "Articles, Books and More," you are searching not only for physical materials, but also for electronic and digital materials. This means that e-books, journal articles available through online databases, and other electronic and digital resources are included in the search.

                                         OneSearch search results

  • The first search result in the image above is an e-book: the format type is labeled as "Book" and its availability status is "Available Online." When you click on the search result to view the item record, you will see "Full text availability" under the "Access Online" section. Selecting one of the link options will enable you to access the e-book.
  • The second and fourth search results in the image are journal articles accessible through online databases: the format type is labeled as "Article" and its availability status is "Available Online." Again, when you click on the search result to view the item record, you will see "Full text availability" under the "Access Online" section. Selecting one of the link options will enable you to access the journal text to read online or download as a PDF. (Note that different databases will have different options for accessing the full text.)
    • You'll also notice additional details in the article search results, including the journal name and publication information. There are also symbols indicating if the article is peer-reviewed or open-access. This information can help you determine the relevance of the article to your research.
