Citing Your Sources

AI and Your Course Assignments

  • Always confirm with your professor whether AI tools like ChatGPT are allowed for each assignment.
  • Always verify information and sources generated by AI tools.
    • AI has been known to generate false information and to cite non-existent sources.
    • AI-generated text mines people's intellectual property without crediting them, which raises ethical concerns.
  • You do need to credit ChatGPT and similar tools whenever you use the text that they generate in your own work.
  • Major style guides have begun to address generative AI tools. Please note that directions may evolve.
  • Make sure that you are following your instructor's guidelines regarding the use and attribution of AI tools .
