Backups
Keeping reliable backups is an integral part of data management. Your personal computer, external hard drives, departmental or university servers are examples of tools used for backing up data. CDs or DVDs are not recommended bcause they fail so frequently. The UK Data Archive provides additional guidelines on data storage, back-up, and security.

Test your backup system
In order to make sure that your backup system is working properly, try to retrieve your data files and make sure that you can read them. You should do this upon initial setup of the system and on a regular schedule thereafter.

Depositing your data in an archive or repository is the best approach and will facilitate its discovery and preservation.
UC Libraries supports several repositories through membership
Qualitative Data Repository (QDR), a dedicated archive for storing and sharing digital data (and accompanying documentation) generated or collected through qualitative and multi-method research in the social sciences and related disciplines
Open Science Framework (OSF), a collaboration platform and a research registration and output sharing platform developed by the Center for Open Science in 2013. Though it has Science in the title, it is discipline agnostic and is heavily used by researchers in education, psychology, cancer biology, and many other areas of research.
Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), an international consortium of more than 810 academic institutions and research organizations. It provides leadership and training in data access, curation, and methods of analysis for the social and behavioral sciences research communities.
The Office of Research also support a data repository for NIH funded project
If you wish to share your data in an open archive, but there is not an appropriate repository in your discipline, please Contact Us to discuss data sharing options utilizing our current and future digital repository systems.
