Evaluate Journals for Your Manuscript

Evaluating a journal may include a subjective assessment as well as quantitative metrics.

Where To Start:
Look at journals that you read, that your colleagues read and publish in, and the journals that you cite in your work. Remember to always check that the journal title and ISSN match the journal that you're viewing.

Questions To Consider:

  • Does the scope of the journal match your scholarship?
  • What are the submission guidelines (e.g. types of articles published, article length) and do they match with your manuscript?
  • Are you and/or your colleagues familiar with the journal?
  • What is the typical timeframe from submission to publication?
  • What is the reputation of the journal? What is the journal's impact factor?
  • What do you know about the journal's affiliation, publisher, and editorial board?
  • Do they charge a fee for article publication?
  • What are the journal's copyright policies?
  • Will the article be open access or will it be embargoed for a specific time frame?
