LibGuides Cheat Sheet

Refer to this guide for standards on how to create & maintain your libguides.

About This Guide

This guide is an online resource for editors which includes information about protocols and guidelines, best practices, reusable content, statistics, training info and feedback options.

If you need to set up a new Libguides account or have questions, please contact either Nimisha Bhat or Erin Rinto, your LibGuides Administrators.

LSP Updates

Due to the LSP migration this summer, all LibGuides editors will need to refresh their guides to reflect changes to library platforms and terms. It is recommended that editors update the following:

  • Widgets: If your guide is using a Summon or Catalog search widget, you will need to delete this. The local LSP Discovery & User Experience Working Group is looking into providing a Primo widget for replacement. More information will be updated here accordingly.

  • Links: All links to Summon or Catalog items will be broken by the June 25th go-live date. These will need to be removed or replaced as needed.

  • Tutorials: Any videos of tutorials and demos reflecting Summon or the Catalog will need to be updated.

  • Any instances of the words "Summon" and "catalog" need to be revised/replaced with OneSearch.

This is also a good time to run stats on your guides to determine if the use justifies keeping a guide or unpublishing something that is outdated.

Uses for LibGuides

LibGuides are an ideal tool for identifying resources for research and supporting instruction. Examples include:

  • by subject (e.g. sociology subject guide)
  • by course or class assignment (e.g. course guides for English Composition)
  • by specific topic or issue (e.g. global warming)
  • by providing resources for in-class library instruction
  • by providing guidance on how to do research (e.g. FYE, Information Literacy, Distance Learning)
  • highlighting various areas of the library collection (e.g. new book titles)
  • library sponsored Faculty Development workshops (HSL, UCBA)
Consider these alternative tools for disseminating other types of information:
  • UC Libraries website: communicating library services, policies or general information
  • SharePoint: sharing information and collaborating with UC library colleagues.
