What is ArcGIS StoryMaps

ArcGIS StoryMaps is a web-based platform that combines maps, text, images, and multimedia content to create interactive digital narratives. Specifically, it allows users to creatively combine maps, 3D scenes, embedded content, multimedia, and more into an interactive narrative. As such, this tool is particularly useful for creating create digital stories and presentations that incorporate geographic contexts.

History of Esri StoryMaps

2011: Esri’s storytelling journey begins
Esri launched its digital storytelling journey in 2011, seeking to combine maps with multimedia content. The original "Classic StoryMaps" debuted in 2012, introducing basic templates like Map Tour and Map Journal for geographic storytelling.

2019: Transition to ArcGIS StoryMaps
A significant transformation occurred with the release of the new ArcGIS StoryMaps platform, featuring a flexible interface and immersive storytelling capabilities. The platform debuted at the Esri User Conference, demonstrating enhanced features and improved user experience.

2021: ArcGIS StoryMaps grows
Classic templates were removed from ArcGIS Online as organizations worldwide embraced the modern version. The classic Esri Story Maps entered extended support, allowing creation but limiting updates to critical maintenance only.

2023-2025: Final Phase
Classic StoryMaps entered mature support in 2023 with no further updates, while ArcGIS StoryMaps continues receiving new features. The classic version will be completely retired in fall 2025, after which existing classic stories will no longer be accessible through ArcGIS Online.
