Information Literacy Course Content at UCBA

Faculty guide for information literacy content that can be incorporated into any UCBA course.

Research Process

This content introduces students to the research process including their experiences and challenges with research. These activities can be used with groups or individuals, as a stand alone activity, or as a research assignment component.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Provide a basic introduction to the research process
  • Introduce resources available to students through the UCBA Library

Use in Canvas: As part of an ungraded or graded introduction to library research or specific research assignment

Worksheets: Students can download accessible Word document worksheets to a device

Instructions: 

  • Use as a full playlist (5 videos) or individual videos for a unit or module to introduce foundational research concepts and strategies
  • Use as a full playlist (5 videos) or individual videos to introduce a research assignment or project

Resource Needed:

Research Process: Fears, Experiences, & Knowledge Activity

Instructions 

  • Provide students with a fake research assignment and ask them to review it for questions and/or confusing points
  • Inform students research assignment isn't real
  • Use Research Process Fears Experiences Knowledge worksheet to discuss questions/concerns and emphasize importance of time management and using college support services 
  • Reflect (e.g. discussion board) on experience completing a research assignment

Instructions:

  • Watch Research Starting Points video (11:58 minutes, includes pause time for worksheet completion)
  • Complete Research Starting Points worksheet using research topic or question

Research Stumbling Blocks Activity

Instructions:

  • Ask students to think about stumbling blocks encountered when working on a research assignment or project
  • Capture notes using any format and space (e.g. Word, Flipgrid, notecards) 
  • Share stumbling blocks to shape class conversation on the process of doing research
