Faculty guide for information literacy content that can be incorporated into any UCBA course.

Search Strategies

This content helps students develop search strategies to find potential sources for their research assignment and learn how to use Summon and the library databases. The activity and/or videos can be used with groups or individuals, as a stand alone activity, or as a research assignment component.

Learning Outcome: Use keywords and applicable limiters when searching for information

Use in Canvas: As part of an ungraded or graded introduction to library research or specific research assignment

Worksheets: Students can download accessible Word document worksheet to a device

Find One Source Activity

Instructions: 

  • Review Key Concepts & Keywords video (2:15 minutes)
  • Use any search tool to find one source on example research topic or question
  • Complete Find One Source worksheet 
  • Discussion and share worksheet results (e.g. Discussion Board, Flipgrid) 
    • What are the benefits and drawbacks to the search tool?
    • What are the characteristics of the source chosen?
    • What search strategies would you recommend?
