Using the Attachment option to manually attach various file types to EndNote references

The file Attachment option provides yet another way to add full text to your EndNote references when the automatic options fail.  You may have acquired a PDF full text article associated with one of your EndNote references from a colleague, or perhaps it was already on your hard drive or on a cloud drive.  You may have used the Article Linker option to acquire the full text article.  Regardless of "how" you retrieved the PDF, you can point to it and attach it to your EndNote reference.


  1. Select or highlight the reference to which you want to attach a PDF.
  2. Select References from the EndNote menu bar, then select "File Attachments" and then select "Attach File."
  3. From the file dialog box (see below) select the desired file and then click on [Open] to link the file to your EndNote reference.
  4. Click on any other reference in the EndNote Reference List panel to confirm this change.
