Technology: How do you want to reach your audience?

PowerPoint 2010 & 2013

Microsoft presentation program. 

Tip: In slide show view selecting CTRL + left click on the mouse creates a laser pointer effect.

 

Prezi

Cloud-based presentation software which includes a Zooming User Interface (ZUI), enabling users to zoom in and out of their presentation media.  The EDU Standard license requires free registration. 

Tip: Due to the amount of movement in prezis, members of your audience who are sensitive to motion sickness may not be able to watch all or parts of your presentation.  To avoid making your audience sick make sure to keep content close together on the screen while you are designing your prezi.

Death by Powerpoint

Presentation by David Bowman detailing best practices to keep your audience engaged while using PowerPoint. 

Tip: 1 slide = 6 words; 10 slides = 20 minutes; Font = +30pt

 

Pecha Kucha

A simple presentation format showing 20 images, each for 20 seconds (6 min. 40 sec. total time).  This style of presentation is generally visually driven and highly rehearsed.  It works best for short, concise presentations

Tip: To get the timing right, create PowerPoint slides with a 20 second timer for each slide.  To do this in PowerPoint, go to the Transition Tab in normal view.  Create 20 blank slides.  Select CTRL + A to select all slides.  Under Advance Slide deselect On Mouse Click and check After 00:20:00.

 

Poll Everywhere

Audience response system.  Requires free registration. 

Tip: Votes are typically displayed within 2-5 seconds, but they may be delayed for longer period of time depending on the voter’s cellular character.  Be prepared to continue speaking to your audience while you wait for the votes to display.

Videos: Would a short video help explain a concept you want to convey?

Vimeo

Video hosting site.  Locate videos on your topic or post your own videos.  Requires free registration. 

Tip:  Not all Vimeo videos are able to be embedded in PowerPoint.  Vimeo Plus and Vimeo PRO users have the power to disable embedding in their privacy settings.

 

YouTube

Video hosting site.  Locate videos on your topic or post your own videos.  Requires free registration. 

Tip: To embed a YouTube video in PowerPoint, select the Share tab on YouTube.  Select Embed and deselect everything except Use Old Embed Code.  Copy the Embed Code.  In PowerPoint, go to the Insert Tab and select Video.  Select Video from Website and paste in the Embed Code.

Screenshots & Images: Do you want to show the audience a specific website or image?

PowerPoint 2010 & 2013

To capture screenshots go to the Insert Tab and select Screenshot.  For a full screenshot of your image, select the Available Window you want to copy.  For a specific clip of your image, select Screen Clipping.

Tip:  After your image appears in PowerPoint, you can customize the shape of your screenshot picture by selecting the picture and using the Format Tab in Picture Tools.  From the Format Tab select Crop and then Crop to Shape.

 

Screencast-O-Matic

Screen capture recording.  There is a 15 minute limit for free videos.  Requires free registration. 

Tip:  The MP4 format of videos available with Screencast-O-Matic can be viewed on both windows and mac machines (including iPads).

 

Tagxedo

Tool to generate word clouds from text that you provide. 

Tip: Tagxedo offers more customization than Wordle.  You can customize font, theme, color, orientation, and shape.

High Tech “Handouts”: Do you want your audience to have something to reference later?

Delicious

Social bookmarking site.  Requires free registration. 

Tip: Links are by default public on Delicious.  To make your links private, check the box marked private when you add each link.

 

Diigo

Diigo allows you to highlight text and attach sticky notes to specific parts of web pages.  Requires free registration. 

Tip:  Diigo also allows you to capture a portion of the screen and annotate on the screenshot.

 

LiveBinders

Allows you to create online binders to collect and organize your information.  Requires free registration.
